CSU Summer Arts panel discussion features movie experts

Alan JacobsCSU Summer Arts’ month long course on short film production and post production will provide an opportunity for the public to get an insider’s view of the movie industry from a panel of film writers and producers.

The panel discussion about how to maneuver the labyrinth of Hollywood’s media machine is scheduled at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at the Wahlberg Recital Hall in the Music Building at California State University, Fresno campus.

Scheduled to participate are Michael Berlin (“Miami Vice,” “The Commish”), Alan Jacobs (founding trustee of the Sundance Institute), Matthew Jacobs (“Lassie,” “Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”), John Schimmel (“Collateral Damage,” “Only Hope Outlander”) and Jule Selbo (“Hard Promises,” “Melrose Place”).

Taken by photographer Tim GreyOthers on the second-week lineup of CSU Summer Arts’ public performances during its 23rd season and 11th at Fresno State are:

  • Tim Grey, who lectures and teaches about digital photography and has written dozens of books on the subject. He will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the Fresno Art Museum in central Fresno.

  • Alix Olsen and Kimberly Dark, who are internationally recognized slam poetry artists and will share the Wahlberg stage at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8.

Alix OlsenThe CSU Summer Arts program is composed of master classes taught by experts across a range of cultural arts. Many of the teachers perform publicly during their time in Fresno and each course concludes with a student exhibition, reading or performance. The culminations are free, open to the public and held on campus.

  • Digital Photography –1 p.m. Conley Art Gallery. Phebe Conley Art Building.

  • The Short Film and the Film Actor – 1 p.m. TV Studio, Speech Arts Building.

  • Spoken Word Performance – 2 p.m. Conley Lecture Hall, University Business Center; 4 p.m. around campus.

  • Screenwriting – 3 p.m. TV Studio.

  • Dance Performance – 5:30 p.m. John Wright Theatre, Speech Arts Building.

  • Gospel Singing and Conducting – 7 p.m. Concert Hall.

  • Steppenwolf Theatre – 8:30 p.m., Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre, Speech Arts Building.
