The 8th annual Ag Summer
Bridge program began Sunday, July 27, at California State
University, Fresno and will conclude Friday, Aug. 8.
Two dozen Fresno City College students will participate in the two-week
program entitled “Bridging the GAP – Gateway to Agriculture
Professions.”
The program will provide underrepresented
students the opportunity to learn about agriculture while
experiencing some of the college life at Fresno State.
The project is comprehensive field trip experience in agricultural
science for students, said Lonna Torrico, program director.
“Beyond learning about agricultural careers, the students will network
with Fresno State educators and Central Valley agricultural leaders,
participate in leadership activities and visit agricultural businesses,”
Torrico said.
Some of the visitations are to Lyons-Magnus, Campos Brothers Farms, Sun
West Fruit Company and Booth Ranches in Orange Cove.
Funded through a United States Department of Agriculture – Hispanic
Serving Institutions Grant, the program is operated by the Central
Valley Ag Literacy program through the university’s College of Agricultural
Sciences and Technology.
The students also will participate in agricultural enrichment
activities, advisement in academics and transfer procedures and
agricultural career exploration.
