Fresno State baseball victory misses out in ESPY Awards

The ESPYSThe Fresno State Bulldogs, nominated in the Best Upset category, for an ESPY Award, were upset themselves by the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory over New England. The ESPY Awards ceremony, which was stated Wednesday, July 16, in Los Angeles, will be televised at 6 p.m. Sunday on ESPN. The other competition in the Best Upset category came from Appalachian State’s defeat of Michigan to open the 2007 college football season and Da'Tara, the longshot winner of the Belmont Stakes.

Representing Fresno State at the ESPY Awards were Mike Batesole, the college baseball Coach of the Year, and players Steve Detwiler, Steve Sudsorf (both outfielders) and pitcher Justin Wilson, who were named to the 2008 All-College World Series team.

The Bulldogs spent Tuesday afternoon participating in "Studio Style" at the Standard-Downtown Hotel and mingled with other nominees and celebrities at the ESPY Pool Party and Major League All-Star Game watch party at the hotel.

On Wednesday's schedule were the Kellogg’s-ESPN breakfast to present the inaugural Youth Achievement Awards, a reception for nominees and presenters in the afternoon and the red carpet walk outside the Nokia Theatre, near the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

The 16th annual ESPY Awards ceremony, hosted by singer Justin Timberlake, begins at 6 p.m. Sunday on ESPN.

The show attracts top celebrities from sports and entertainment to commemorate the past year in sports, recognize major sports achievements, relive unforgettable moments and salute leading performers and performances.
