Tree
Fresno has recognized California State University, Fresno’s solar
photovoltaic parking shelter project with an honorable mention in the
organization’s 2008 CityScape Awards program.
The CityScape Awards
are presented each year for achievements throughout the Fresno-Clovis
area that improve the environment and enhance the natural beauty of the
urban landscape.
The Fresno State
project, a partnership with the Chevron Energy Solutions division of
Chevron (NYSE: CVX), provides the first sheltered parking on campus,
protecting nearly 700 vehicles from the elements. The 3,872 photovoltaic
cells atop the parking shelters generate 20 percent of Fresno State’s
electricity demand.
The $11.9 million
project – the largest of its kind on a university campus – was completed
in fall 2007.
The Tree Fresno honor
in its “Green” Projects category is the second from the organization for
Fresno State in as many years. In 2007, the university won the Judges
Special Award for “continuous and varied efforts to enhance the
community not only by beautifying but by educating the general public as
well as the students about horticulture options.”
Just three months ago,
the solar-power parking project received a state Energy Efficiency
Partnership Best Practices Award in the Renewables/Innovative Energy
Generation or Procurement category. The partnership is composed of the
23-campus California State University, the 10-campus University of
California and the 109-school California Community Colleges system.
The latest Tree Fresno
recognition will be presented at the CityScape Awards dinner on Sept. 5,
a fundraiser for the organization. Details are available by calling
559.221.5556.
