|
The Smittcamp Family Honors College at California State University, Fresno has admitted its 10th entering class of high-achieving high school graduates who will receive scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year. The Honors College has become so highly regarded that applications increased to more than 500 this year. In honor of the 10th anniversary, the number of admitted students was increased to 58 from the usual 50, said Dr. Stephen Rodemeyer, Honors College director. Students accepted for admission receive an annual President's Scholarship for their undergraduate degree program up to a maximum of eight semesters, which will cover in-state registration and fees, a laptop stipend and an optional credit for a two-person, community-style room in university housing. Additional financial benefits include free Internet access, free campus student parking and extended library checkout privileges. The Smittcamp Family Honors College is unique in the California State University system in that scholarship students are admitted as a group, take a series of specially designed honors courses and interact in educational and social activities. Honors College applicants must score 1,800 or above on the SAT, be in the upper 10 percent of their graduating class or have a minimum GPA of 3.6. Smittcamp Family Honors College students are required to volunteer 30 hours of community service in their first year and 20 hours in subsequent years. To remain in the program, a student must enroll in at least 12 units and earn a 3.0 GPA as a freshman, 3.25 as a sophomore and 3.4 as a junior. The Smittcamp Family Honors College began in 1998 with a $1 million gift from Earl and Muriel Smittcamp and family, a prominent agribusiness family and longtime supporters of Fresno State.
