Presidential candidates and
illegal immigration will be the topics at California State University,
Fresno’s celebration of Constitution Day on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Panel
discussions will be in the Satellite Student Union.
“The next Commander-in-Chief: Obama or McCain” will be the topic of a
panel discussion from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Panelists are Dr. Jeff Cummins and Dr. Alfred Evens of the Political
Science Department, Dr. Sally Tannenbaum of the Communication Department
and John Ellis, Fresno Bee reporter. Dr. Kenneth Hansen of Political
Science will be the moderator.
From 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., “Citizenship and Illegal Immigration” will be
discussed by Dr. Michael Becker and Hansen of the Political Science
Department, Dr. Keith Clement of the Criminology Department and Dr.
Carlos Perez of the Chicano and Latin American Studies Department. The
moderator will be Dr. Russell Mardon of Political Science.
Constitution Day events are intended to draw attention to the
anniversary of the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, and to
educate Americans about democracy. Federal law requires all federally
funded educational institutions – elementary school through university
level – to hold an educational program on or around Sept. 17 to mark the
signing of the document.
The Fresno State events are sponsored by Associated Students Inc. and
the Political Science Association.
