The fall 2008 lecture series
sponsored by the Ethics Center at California State University, Fresno
will begin Wednesday, Sept. 10, with a discussion of “debt bondage.”
The lectures are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Alice Peters Auditorium in
the University Business Center. They are free and open to the public.
Lectures will include:
Sept. 10 – Usury, Debt Bondage and Payday Loans. Dr. Vince Biondo
(Philosophy) will discuss modern-day credit card and payday loan
industries and how they create the problem of contemporary debt bondage.
Oct. 1 – “Quit Blaming the Victim!” Dr. Steve Walker (College of
Social Sciences) will explore the history of victim rights, highlighting
various ethical concerns and dilemmas.
Oct. 29 – “Academic Integrity at Fresno State.” Dr. Jacques
Benninga (Curriculum and Instruction), Dr. Joyce Ester (Student Affairs) and
Dr. Jim Prince (Biology), members of the Honor Code committee at Fresno
State, will discuss academic ethical issues on campus, including how the
honor code works, issues arising in reporting cheating and why academic
integrity should matter to students and faculty.
Nov. 19 – “Food and the Politics of Scarcity.” Edie Jessup,
coordinator of Hunger and Nutrition Services at Fresno Metro Ministry,
will discuss food and the politics of scarcity.
