The fall choir concert at
California State University, Fresno will showcase the university’s
Chamber Singers, Concert Choir and Vocal Jazz Lab Ensemble in an
eclectic program that spans centuries of choral music.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Concert Hall in the Music
Building. Dr. Anna Hamre, the university’s director of choral
activities, conducts.
Early music is represented by Bach’s motet “Der Geist hilft unsrer
Schwachheit auf” and Richard Dering’s “The Country Cries,” a
light-hearted look at the sights and sound of 16th-century England. The
program’s more modern selections are the “Brindisi” from Verdi’s opera
“La Traviata,” and 20th-century composer Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia.”
Featured in the concert will be university dance instructor Ruth
Griffin’s performance of Jackson Hill’s “In Winter’s Keeping,” a
contemporary Japanese work written for San Francisco’s well-regarded
choir, Chanticleer. Percussionist George Ramirez on steel drum will
perform a new setting of the traditional “Kyrie” text by contemporary
American composer Glenn McClure.
Tickets are at $6 general, $5 faculty, staff, seniors and students and
are available online or at the door.
