The College of Agricultural
Sciences and Technology at California State University, Fresno will host
the International Symposium on Living with Potatoes from 9 a.m. to noon
on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in room 101 of the Grosse Industrial Technology
Building, 2255 E. Barstow Ave.
The symposium will focus on growth, distribution and nutritional impact
of potatoes. There will be nine presentations from local and national
speakers on topics such as sustainability, genetic improvement and
cooking with potatoes.
The event is free of charge and open to the public.
The symposium is part of “The International Year of the Potato,” a
campaign to raise awareness about the potato’s importance. The
celebration, sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations, includes more than 110 seminars and festivals held on
six continents.
“The International Year of the Potato symposium is a unique opportunity
to participate in recognizing the importance of one of the key crops
that feed the world,” said Dr. Charles Boyer, dean of the College of
Agricultural Sciences and Technology at Fresno State. “The rise of
agriculture and society has been based on a few high-energy crops like
potato. It is critical for members of our modern high technology world
to understand and appreciate the role agriculture plays in ensuring a
healthy and productive society. This symposium is one way we in the
college can help inform the community.”
The symposium invites academicians, researchers, growers, associations,
students, practitioners and government workers interested in promoting
the sustainability of potatoes, said organizer Klaus Tenbergen. He is a
culinary science professor in the Department of Food Science and
Nutrition at Fresno State and the university’s Culinology® program
director.
