California State University,
Fresno’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism will host Dr.
Robert Jensen, a University of Texas journalism professor, speaking on
Nov. 7 about “Patriotism and Journalism in the Era of Globalization.”
Jensen’s speech is scheduled at 2 p.m. at the Alice Peters Auditorium in
the University Business Center. There is no admission charge and the
event is open to the public.
Jensen, who is no stranger to controversy, challenges the assumption
that journalists should be patriotic in their coverage of news events.
He drew extensive criticism when he wrote in the Houston Chronicle –
just after terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon in 2001 – that
the United States was responsible for larger acts of terrorism than
those on Sept. 11.
He has written books and articles about pornography, institutionalized
racism, white privilege and radical feminism. In 2009, Soft Skull Press
is scheduled to publish his “All My Bones Shake: Radical Politics in the
Prophetic Voice.”
Jensen’s campus visit is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and
Humanities.
