Wicked Wellness Carnival is Oct. 22

Responsible driving at Wellness Carnival
Thomas Ngo, left, student member of the Alcohol Advisory Council, and Student Affairs Vice President Paul Oliaro try out the California Highway Patrol’s drunk driving simulator at the Wicked Wellness Carnival Wednesday at Fresno State. CHP officer Hank Campbell speaks with them. The event was part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week activities. Students lined up at the CHP demonstration to see what it’s like to drive while under the influence and how easily an impaired driver can lose control.

The second annual Wicked Wellness Carnival will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at California State University, Fresno as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.

The carnival offers activities that demonstrate some of the serious dangers of alcohol abuse and emphasize the university’s message of responsible drinking as part of overall wellness, said Kathy Yarmo, coordinator of Health Promotion and Wellness Services for the division of Student Affairs.

This year’s theme is taken from the Broadway play, “Wicked.”

The California Highway Patrol will conduct a drunk driving simulator. Other activities include an obstacle course with “fatal vision” goggles, human bowling and a “Jeopardy!”-style alcohol education game. A caricature artist will be present and a Mocktail Lounge will be available for students.

The carnival, which is free and open to Fresno State students, faculty and staff, is hosted by University Health and Psychological Services at the Memorial Court in front of the Kennel Bookstore.

The event is sponsored by Associated Students Inc., the Office of Traffic Safety Alcohol Grant, the Social Norms Alcohol Grant, the Golden Key International Honor Society, the Student Health Science Association, University Student Union Productions and the Alcohol Safety Council at Fresno State.
