The Experimental Theatre Company (ETC) at California State University, Fresno, will stage a new version of Aeschylus’ classic Greek drama “The Persians” on Nov. 14-16 at the Lab School Theatre on campus.

ETC, a Fresno State Theatre Arts Department student production company, will perform contemporary American playwright Ellen McLaughlin’s adaption. “The Persians,” which debuted around 472 B.C.E., is considered the oldest surviving play in Western theater history.

It’s focused on the aftermath of the failed attempt by the Persian Empire under Xerxes to conquer the Greek city-states. In considering an uncertain future worldwide, following the unexpected defeat, Persia must confront the impact of failure on its ambitions.

To help connect the ancient themes with contemporary audiences, director Yosef Mahmood has incorporated archetypal masks for the production. Mahmood is a student majoring in theater arts and political science.

ETC’s “The Persians” will be performed at 4 and 8 p.m. Nov. 14, 8 p.m. Nov. 15 and 2 p.m. Nov. 16.
