Fresno State honored the
memory of Mikey Terrones at the Nov. 15 football game with
an on-field recognition of his family from the Santa Barbara
County community of Lompoc. Dr. Peter N. Smits, Fresno State
Vice President for Advancement, far left in photo above,
accompanied family members onto the field. They are, from
left, Mikey’s father Michael Terrones, his grandmother Elsie
Cortez, brother Cooper, and mother Cheryl Hiatt.
The family
represented the Lompoc High School teen whose stated dream
was to attend and play for Fresno State. But he lost his
life in a car crash three years ago as a sophomore. The
family established a toy drive in Mikey’s memory to help
less fortunate youngsters – a goal he had set for himself if
he attended Fresno State. This year, the drive will be Dec.
6 in Lompoc.
About 20 family and friends made the journey
from Lompoc Saturday and enjoyed Bulldog Boulevard prior to
the game as well as attended the Fresno State Alumni
Association tailgate where they met University President
John D. Welty. It was the first college football game
experience for the family. |
