California State University, Fresno will host the third annual African-American Middle School Student Recruitment Conference from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 20.

The conference, sponsored by University Outreach Services, begins with registration in the Satellite Student Union (2485 E. San Ramon Ave. at Maple Avenue).

The event is free and open to the public.

Steve Morris, principal of Carver Academy middle school in Fresno, will deliver the keynote remarks to nearly 500 students, parents and teachers expected to attend the conference whose theme is “Be a Leader, Lead the Change.”

Tanya Crabb, the outreach counselor who is coordinating the event, said the conference will teach students how to navigate the transition from middle school to high school. Student also will have an opportunity to explore different college majors through tours, contests, presentations and hands-on demonstrations.

“The focus of this year’s conference is helping middle school students to recognize their power to shape the world around them,” Crabb said.
