A children’s book that blends
bold, vividly colored poster-style illustrations, Mother Goose rhymes,
the alphabet and California places and animals has been published by
Doug Hansen, an associate professor of graphic design at California
State University, Fresno.
Heyday Books in Berkeley plans an April launch for “Mother Goose in
California,” but it already is on sale in the Kennel Bookstore at Fresno
State and Hansen has several book signings on his schedule.
The book project began in 1987, when Hansen decided to design a series
of posters around the rhyme, “Cat and the Fiddle.” He later decided he
wanted one for each letter in the alphabet.
Hansen has been a Fresno-based artist and illustrator for 30 years. In
fall 2002, he joined the faculty at Fresno State after a 23-year career
at The Fresno Bee, where he was known for his weekly series of
pen-and-ink drawings of landmarks, “Fresno Sketchbook,” published as
books in 1991 and 1993.
Hansen he earned his bachelor’s degree (1974) and a master’s (2001) from
Fresno State. He was the Graduate Dean’s Medalist for the College of
Arts and Humanities. His illustration career began on campus with
cartoons and comics for the Daily Collegian newspaper.
“Tree portraits,” Hansen’s paintings of staff- and faculty-favorite
trees on campus, has appeared in FresnoState Magazine since 2004.
Hansen plans book signings at the Golda Foundation Art Space, 1239
Fulton Mall, Fresno (5-8 p.m. March 5 during ArtHop); at Fig Garden
Bookstore, Fig Garden Village, Fresno (1-3 p.m. March 7); Books Inc. in
the Marina, 2251 Chestnut St., San Francisco (11 a.m. March 14); and
Petunia’s Place, 2017 W. Bullard Ave, Fresno (1-2:30 p.m. March 21).
