Fiesta Health Fair March 6

Fresno Barrios Unidos, in partnership with Fresno READS, will host a Friday Night Fiesta for children and their families at Wolters Elementary School, 5174 N. First St., from 4 to 6:30 p.m. March 6. About 400 people are expected to attend.

The fiesta will offer free food, over 30 informational booths, entertainment, a cake walk, face painting, the science and fitness mobiles from the city of Fresno Parks and Recreation Department (sponsored by City Council member Henry T. Perea) and other activities.

Fresno Barrios Unidos Friday Night Fiestas last year were successful in reaching families of 2,400 participants with valuable information within their own communities. A goal is to continue reaching out to Fresno families and youth through health education, parenting classes and teen support groups.

Socorro Santillan, the executive director of Fresno Barrios Unidos, said, “This will truly be a great event for the public to receive valuable information and resources, while having a safe and fun night with their family.”

Fresno READS is a tutoring program employing California State University, Fresno work-study students at Wolters and Vinland Elementary schools, the S.M.I.L.E. Center and Stone Soup. Students volunteer time to tutor and mentor children who need to improve their reading and math skills. The program is housed in the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning at Fresno State.

Brooks Wheeler, program coordinator for Fresno READS feels “privileged to bring the children of Wolters a special event where they and their families can come together for a night of free fun and information.”

The March 6 event is the result of a partnership among Fresno Barrios Unidos, Fresno READS, Fresno State and Wolters Elementary. “This partnership is key in helping us make a positive impact in the community,” said Wheeler. “Together, we are listening to the voice of the community and responding by providing a variety of resources in one location.”
