The
opening to students and faculty of the new and expanded Henry Madden
Library on Friday, Feb. 20, also will introduce Fresno State’s first
Starbucks coffee bar, which is on the library’s second floor.
Like other libraries around the nation, if the excitement of the new
$105 million library isn’t enough to keep patrons awake, maybe a Caramel
Macchiato will do the job.
Operated by University Dining Services, the 1,486 square-foot Starbucks
(NYSE: SBUX) will offer a full menu of freshly brewed coffee and
specialty drinks, plus fresh sandwiches and salads, said Karen Focarazzo,
who is managing the café.
“We are very excited about opening our very own Starbucks here on the
Fresno State campus,” Focarazzo said, noting the popularity of the
coffee bar chain with students.
There are Starbucks cafes on more than 100 American university campuses.
The chain typically does not franchise operations except to companies
that provide access to real estate otherwise unavailable. University
Dining Services is a licensed franchisee of Starbucks.
Baristas and team leaders are all Fresno State students.
“Having a staff made up of Fresno State students really embodies the
community aspect that Starbucks was founded on,” said Ricky Serrano, the
assistant manager.
Library Dean Peter McDonald noted: "Students today expect a multiplicity
of services under their library roof. A fun cafe is just one facet of
the new library experience."
The cafe is in the southeast corner of the second floor, just east of
the stairways and elevators. There is seating for 15 inside and the
library will allow its patrons to take their coffee cups to other parts
of the building to study, read or do research. More seating may be added
in the future. Hours are 7:45 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7:45 a.m.-5
p.m. Friday and 1-5 p.m. weekends.
