The California State
University, Fresno men’s bowling team won the Las Vegas sectional title
last weekend and is headed to the 2009 USBC Intercollegiate Team
Championship in Rockford, Ill., next month.
The women’s team also qualified for the team championships by finishing
third place at the sectional.
The top 64 men’s and women’s intercollegiate bowling programs are
invited to four different section locations where the top four finishers
in each division advance to the Intercollegiate Team Championships April
15-19.
Fresno state standouts were junior Paul Hogan and sophomore Kirsten
Sorensen. Sorensen also qualified for the 2009 Intercollegiate Singles
Championship to be held in Euless, Texas, May 17-19.
The national competition will begin with each team bowling 32 “Baker”
qualifying games. The “Baker” format is a unique format where five
individuals compete for one team score. Following the qualifying games
the teams will be seeded 1-16 in each division and will begin the double
elimination matches. The elimination matches involve a
best-of-seven-game Baker match.
The elimination matches will conclude with two teams from each division
advancing to the finals, which will be aired on CBS’s College Sports
June 2-3.
