The
flags at California State University, Fresno will be flown at half-staff
on Thursday, March 19, in memory of former assistant football coach Dan
Brown.
University President John D. Welty ordered the tribute for Brown,
50, who died Friday night after a two-year battle with brain cancer.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, but continued coaching while
undergoing treatment. He retired after the 2009 season’s final game in
the New Mexico Bowl, ending a 12-year coaching career at Fresno State.
“The university community is deeply saddened by the loss of Coach Dan
Brown,” Welty said. “He was a fine leader of young men who prepared them
for life's challenges beyond the football field. Coach Brown was an
inspiration to his players, his fellow coaches and the community. Our
thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
A viewing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, will be followed
by recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated at 10
a.m. Thursday, March 19. All events will be in the St. Paul Newman
Center at 1572 E. Barstow Ave. (just north of Bulldog Stadium).
