Srinivasan chairs International Crop Science Committee

Dr. Ganesan Srinivasan, director of the University Agricultural Laboratory at California State University, Fresno, will chair the International Crop Science Committee (ICSC) for 2009 and make sustainable cropping systems the key committee focus.

Srinivasan was appointed chair by Kenneth Quesenberry, president of the Crop Science Society of America. The appointment is based on experience in international agriculture, service to the crop science society and willingness to spend the time necessary to serve, Srinivasan said.

“I am honored to be elected chair of ICSC,” he said. “I intend to look at issues and challenges facing sustainable cropping systems at a global level and how U.S. farmers can ‘think globally and act locally’ in these difficult economic times.”

Since August 2005, Srinivasan has directed the 1,000-acre University Farm, within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at Fresno State. The farm is composed of more than 25 enterprises that provide students with hands-on learning in agriculture. He also is an adjunct faculty member in Fresno State’s Department of Plant Sciences, teaches a graduate-level course in plant breeding and conducts research on conservation tillage in sweet corn. Prior to joining Fresno State, he was principal scientist and associate director of the Maize Program at the Mexico-based International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement.

In October, he was accepted as a 2008 Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America, becoming one of 10 fellows selected for the organization’s highest honor and placing him among an elite group of agricultural researchers around the world.

For more information contact Srinivasan at 559.278.2011 or gsrinivasan@csufresno.edu.
