Business students win HR Games

Teams from the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno placed first and fourth at the California State Human Resource Games held at California State University, Stanislaus and both teams will compete for the Society for Human Resource Management Pacific West regional title in April.

The HR Games is a “Jeopardy!” style contest that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of management practices – employee selection, labor and employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development and health and safety.

“The amount of information these students master is truly remarkable,” said Dr. Rudy Sanchez, adviser and coach for the teams. “Not only must these students be excellent in the classroom, they must also possess a competitive spirit and work effectively on teams under stressful conditions to be successful in the HR Games.”

Teams from CSU Stanislaus, Long Beach State, San Jose State, CSU Bakersfield and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo competed in the a seven game round-robin tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28, The teams from Fresno State were ranked second and third and played each other in the semifinals for a spot in the championship match.

The Fresno State team of Aaron Meyers of Dallas, Kristen Fragoza of Fresno and Pablo Ruiz de Chavez of Mexico City d efeated Stanislaus 8,600 to 4,800 in the title game.

The fourth-place team is composed of Tasha Latimer of Anaheim, Kelly Roberts of Monterey; and Melissa Freeman of Fresno.

Fresno State will be bidding for its fifth regional title in competition with teams from Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Hawaii and Idaho. Fresno State teams have qualified all 10 years of the regional competition and twice have won national championships.

The teams are coached by faculty members Drs. Rudy J. Sanchez, Jill Bradley and Brian Lyons of the Craig School of Business.

The Craig School HR Games teams are supported by the Business Associates of the Craig School of Business, Human Resource Association of Central California, Associated Students Inc. and the Fresno State student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management.
