 ‘Elvis’ kicks off Fresno State’s ‘Viva Las Vintage Days’ April 16

“Elvis” will be in the house at California State University, Fresno on Thursday, April 16, when opening ceremonies at 11:15 a.m. will launch “Viva Las Vintage Days 2009.”

The ceremony in the South Patio of the University Student Union will feature Jeremy Pierce, an Elvis impersonator who will MC and perform.

The largest student-run event on campus, now in its 35th year, is Thursday through Sunday (April 16-19) and actually begins early Thursday with the Staff Assembly Pancake Breakfast from 7-9 a.m. in the Free Speech Area. Administrators and coaches will be joined by two community guests as flapjack flippers: Sheriff Margaret Mims and Probation Chief Linda Penner.

The first day culminates from 7-11 p.m. with Casino Night in the University Student Union featuring karaoke, contests and prizes. Also that night is Vino Italiano from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Fresno State Winery.

From Friday through Sunday, the celebration swings into full gear with various ongoing attractions from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Battle of the Bands will be presented Friday from 7-11 p.m. at the Satellite Student Union.

On Saturday, the Golden State Strongman Challenge, back by popular demand, will unfold at 10 a.m. on Keats Avenue west of Maple. Events include the Arm-Over-Arm Truck Pull, Car Dead Lift, Overhead Log Press, Super Yoke/Farmers Walk Medley and Atlas Stone for Reps.

Also, on Saturday from 7-9 p.m., the movie “Underworld 3 – Rise of the Lycans” will be shown free at the Satellite Student Union.

Vintage Days ongoing attractions from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday are:

  • The annual Crafts Faire on the north end of the Maple Mall will feature 140 crafters displaying their handmade items.

  • The Boomtown Carnival features student organizations at Fresno State selling a diversity of foods on the south end of Maple Mall.

  • Live entertainment – music and other acts – will be featured on the open stages on the Maple Mall Friday while the Kids’ Zone offers a petting zoo, pony rides, face-painting and more.

  • The Henry Madden Library Open House will feature self-guided tours of the newly opened building – 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday; 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

  • A beer and wine garden featuring award-winning Fresno State wines will be open from noon-5 p.m. on the Maple Mall
