Fresno State students meet legislators in Sacramento today

Seven Fresno State students are in Sacramento today participating in CSU Student Advocacy Day at the State Capital to advocate the importance of higher education.

The students, representing the Associated Students, Inc., will meet with Senators Dave Cogdill, Mike Villines, Jeff Denham and Roy Ashburn; and Assembly members Connie Conway , Tom Berryhill and Juan Arambula.

The students went to Sacramento Friday for the annual California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS) and this morning (April 20) will participate in a press conference at 10 a.m. on the north steps of the capital.

Every year, the board of directors of the California State Student Association (CSSA) invites student leaders from the 23 CSU campuses to attend CHESS. Now in its 14th year, CHESS provides students an opportunity to learn by personal experiences and to become certified student leaders. The conference provides two days of educational sessions followed by a press conference and “CSU Student Advocacy Day at the State Capital” to implement newly learned skills.

Fresno State also will be represented at the CSU Advocacy Day May 4 in Sacramento.

Those attending today’s event include three ASI senators:

  • Sarait Martinez (Student Affairs), a political science and Chicano/Latin American Studies dual major from Salinas;

  • Eduardo Rodriguez (Auxiliaries), a political science and economics major from Del Rey; and

  • Maddie Shannon (Activities) a mass communications/journalism major from Fresno and member of Red Zone.

The others are:

  • Loan Le, a political science major from Fresno who is president of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society and involved with the USU Leadership Board and the Phi Alpha Delta Law fraternity.

  • Orry Hamilton, a political science major from Stockton, who is president of the Political Science Association and member of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honors Society and Phi Alpha Delta.

  • Chris Ballard, a political science and business administration accounting dual major from Wasco.

  • Alejandro Garcia, a political science major from Wasco who is a board member for the Fresno State College Democrats and a member of MEChA and College Assistance Migrant Program.
