Sweeten elected Fresno State ASI president in ‘green’ election

Jessica SweetenJessica Sweeten, a junior agriculture communication major with an emphasis in public relations from Hilmar, was elected president of Associated Students Inc. (ASI) at California State University, Fresno in student voting that ended at noon today. She starts her term as president on June 1.

The election marks the first time students voted electronically. The transfer from paper ballots to e-ballots is a result of advances in technology and part of ASI efforts to “go green.”  During the three-day election, ballots were cast by 1,303 of Fresno State's 22,000 students.

 

In other election results, students voted for a referendum (704-365 that would give the ASI Senate the option to pay college senators and senators-at-large.

Lauren Johnson, a junior business major, was elected vice president of finance.

Lauren JohnsonFour students won seats to the ASI Senate as college/school senators: Bri Witt (Agriculture), Jamie Krause (Health & Human Services), Debbie Monroe (Kremen), Cesar Sanchez (Business), Matthew Todd (Engineering).

 

Winning at-large senate seats were Alex Andreotti, Clifton Wahlberg, Maddie Shannon, Julianne Phillips, Eduardo Rodriquez, Melissa Mata, Peter Casacca, Cody Madsen and Selena Farnesi .

 

Aly Smith, the election commissioner, said that one slate of 10 students was disqualified after the Student Court determined, after a hearing April 22, that the candidates had violated the ASI election code.
