The taste and essence of
Italy will be celebrated at the Fresno State Winery’s Vino Italiano!
Wine Tasting from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 16.
The annual spring event will be held at the winery, 2360 E. Barstow Ave.
(between Cedar and Maple avenues).
Presented by the award-winning winery, the Enology Society and the
Viticulture and Enology Department, Vino Italiano! will celebrate Fresno
State’s Italian wine varietals. They include the 2007 Muscat Canelli
that recently won the Gold Medal at the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle
Wine Competition, the 2006 Zinfandel and 2006 Sangiovese that both won
Silver Medals at the Florida International Competition this year, and
the 2006 and 2007 Barbera.
A special barrel tasting of the 2007 Sangiovese will highlight the
evening. These popular wines will be available for purchase at the
event.
Fresno State Winemaster Kenneth Fugelsang and students from the
viticulture and enology program will be present to discuss the varietals
and their academic participation.
“Vino Italiano highlights another aspect of the hands-on education we
give our students in teaching them about making good, true-to-style
Italian wines,” said Fresno State winemaker John Giannini. “This event
is a great way for wine lovers and enthusiasts to learn more about
Fresno State wine and meet some of our enology students – our future
winemakers.”
Fresno State’s Estate Reserve 2007 extra virgin olive oil also will be
sampled along with Fresno State ice cream and biscotti and hors d’
oeuvres provided by Sam’s Italian Deli.
A gift basket benefit drawing will be held every half hour during the
event, with a grand prize at the end that includes a bottle of each wine
featured. Proceeds from the drawing will benefit the educational mission
of the Enology Society, an independent community organization that
supports the university program’s educational mission.
Admission to Vino Italiano! is $15 for the public, $10 for Fresno State
students, staff, faculty, alumni (with university I.D.) and $5 for
Fresno State Wine Club members, payable at the door by check or cash.
Individuals must be 21 years old to attend.
The admission price includes six tastes: five of the featured wines and
the barrel tasting as well as a commemorative Fresno State Winery glass
and plate.
Enology students will give a tour of the winery facility for all Fresno
State Wine Club members at 5 p.m. Individuals may sign up for the Wine
Club at
www.FresnoStateWinery.com or at the door and get the members
admission price.
Parking will be available in Lot Q on Barstow, just west of the
viticulture and enology facilities on campus.
