Fresno State AFROTC to commission 9 Air Force officers on June 6

Fresno State Air Force ROTC Detachment 35

Air Force ROTC Detachment 35 at California State University, Fresno – one of the nation’s oldest – will host a commissioning ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6.

The event at the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center located in the Student Recreation Center (Shaw and Woodrow avenues), marks the conclusion of the university’s 2009 Commencement activities.

The traditional pinning ceremony will begin with an F-16 flyover by the California Air National Guard’s 144th Fighter Wing, based in Fresno. The officer candidates and guests will gather in front of the Rec Center for the National Anthem and the flyby, then move inside, where Lt Col. Sam Vandiver, professor of Aerospace Studies and unit commander, will officiate.

Scheduled to be commissioned as second lieutenants are:

  • Brandon Abrames, 23, of Fresno, navigator training at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.

  • Bryan Adams, 22, Orange, pilot training at Vance Air Force Base, Okla.

  • Timothy Alvord, 23, Clovis, communications at Cannon AFB, N.M.

  • Joshua Cramer, 21, Modesto, security forces at Langley AFB, Va.

  • Darrin Govan, 25, Chico, intelligence training at Goodfellow AFB, Texas.

  • Kristen Hap, 23, Palmdale, logistics readiness at Travis AFB, near Fairfield.

  • Christopher Huchingson, 23, Porterville, pilot training at Vance AFB.

  • Bradley Hunt, 22, Lemoore, pilot training at Sheppard AFB, Texas.

  • Andrew McCoy, 24, Concord, air battle manager training at Tyndall AFB, Fla.

In 1948, one year after the Air Force became an official branch of America's military, an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps unit was founded at Fresno State. The curriculum is designed to prepare men and women to become Air Force officers while completing a degree.

Last academic year, the 61-cadet unit won the Right of Line Award for Best Detachment in the Nation among medium-sized detachments. Recently, the Fresno State detachment won its sixth consecutive AFROTC Warrior Challenge – a competition among four Northern California detachments in leadership, athletic and team skills.

Public parking for the commissioning ceremony is available free in the North Lot at the Save Mart Center.
