New Fresno State honey, Arbosana olive oil for Mother’s Day

Fresno State Arbosana olive oilIt’s olive oil, wine and honey for mom as the Gibson Farm Market at California State University, Fresno releases two new vintages of its popular extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) and brings back the long-awaited Fresno State farm-fresh honey. Both are packaged in a Mother’s Day special.

Two student-produced wines are included in a “Sweet Wine for a Sweet Mother” promotion: Fresno State White Zinfandel and Vin D'une Nuit, $5.95 each.

The Fresno State Farm introduces its latest student-produced food, Arbosana Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, harvested from the 22-acre olive orchard on the campus farm, announced Dr. Ganesan Srinivasan, director of the University Agricultural Laboratory. It is priced at $16.95 per 500 ml (16.9 oz.) bottle.

A tasting of the new olive oil will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Gibson Farm Market by Gino Favagrossa, Fresno State orchard manager when it will be released for sale to the public at $16.95 per 500 ml (16.9 oz.) bottle.

Since its introduction in 2006, Fresno State olive oil has gained popularity because of its fresh taste, flavor and quality, Srinivasan said.

“We are pleased to release the new Arbosana Extra-Virgin Olive Oil as a single varietal this year in addition to our popular Miller’s Blend - a unique blend of Arbequina and Arbosana varieties,” he said. “Arbosana has a fruitiness, nutty tones and medium pungency and has tasting notes of green tomato, almonds and green banana.” A 500 ml bottle of Miller’s Blend is $14.95.

The honey, produced from hives on the farm, sells for $5.75 in 15.7 oz. (446 g) jars.

“Typically our honey, which is available in small quantities, is sold out in a month or two, and our customers have been awaiting this release for quite some time,” said Jennifer Sobieralski, enterprise marketing and Gibson Farm Market manager.

In addition to its excellent taste and flavor, Fresno State honey has health benefits, said Kristen Coleman, a Fresno State student in the dietetic internship program. “Honey contains natural antibacteria, antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic components, which make it an excellent addition to your diet,” Coleman said.

The Gibson Farm Market is at the southeast corner of Chestnut and Barstow avenues. It is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
