The 24th annual African American Recognition Ceremony for Class of 2009 degree candidates at California State University, Fresno will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at the Save Mart Center.

The ceremony serves as a “right of passage” and has become a powerful celebration of achievements by African American students and their families, said Tawanda Hall, a counselor in the Educational Opportunity Program and event coordinator.

It also serves as an inspirational tool for students still working on their college degrees, Hall said.

She expects more than 2,200 people to attend the event, which is hosted by the Africana American and Indian Studies Program and Black Faculty and Staff Association.

For more information on the event, contact Hall at 559.278.5364 or e-mail tbowers@csufresno.edu.
