The Lyles College of
Engineering at California State University, Fresno is one of 10
collegiate recipients nationwide of the prestigious 2009 HP Innovations
in Education grant. The program is designed to increase the number of
students earning college degrees in engineering, computer science,
information systems and information technology.
Included in the $260,000 grant package is HP technology (wireless tablet
personal computers, wide-format printers, remote-access work stations),
cash and professional services. The HP technology package will be used
in innovative ways to redesign the undergraduate learning experience at
Fresno State.
The grant will help the Lyles College:
-
Change the curriculum so
students better understand the design process through challenges
that address relevant needs in society.
-
Expand and improve
outreach to interest and engage central San Joaquin Valley high
school students in engineering.
-
Better integrate software
and simulations into the undergraduate curriculum to enhance online
learning and improve student success, critical thinking skills and
problem solving.
As the oldest publicly
supported institution of engineering and construction management
education in the Valley, the Lyles College of Engineering at Fresno
State is working to broaden technical teaching and learning in this
region, known as the New California.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the lead department in
implementing the HP grant and is one of the core programs in the college
with educational and research focus on design of machines and systems,
including transportation, mechatronics and energy conversion.
Other programs in the college benefiting from the HP technology include
Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Construction Management,
Electrical Engineering and Geomatics Engineering.
Worldwide, HP is investing more than $17 million in mobile technology,
cash and professional development as part of the global 2009 Innovations
in Education grant program. This initiative follows HP’s five-year, $60
million investment in HP Technology for Teaching grants to more than
1,000 schools and universities in 41 countries. Over the past 20 years,
HP has invested more than $1 billion in cash and equipment to schools,
universities, community organizations and other nonprofit organizations.
“Innovation is key to expanding education opportunity and HP is
privileged to collaborate with educators around the world who are
committed to exploring the exciting possibilities that exist at the
intersection of teaching, learning and technology,” said Jim Vanides,
worldwide program manager for HP Global Social Investments. “Emerging
evidence from the last five years is very positive – excellent
instruction combined with the right technologies is measurably improving
student academic success.”
