The first of 21,180 students
will arrive at California State University, Fresno when move-in begins
Thursday, Aug. 20, at the campus’ University Courtyard residence halls.
This marks the 50th year of housing students on campus.
More than 1,200 students move in, beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday and
continuing through the weekend. Fall 2009 classes begin Monday, Aug. 24
When the dorms first opened in 1959 on the then-new Fresno State campus,
600 students lived in three community-style halls. Six residence suites
have since been added.
Even with greater capacity, there’s a waiting list of 45 student
residents who will be accommodated at the Piccadilly Inn University near
Fresno State until rooms become available, which is expected by the end
of September, said Erin Boele, director of Housing.
Several events for new and returning residents and their parents are
planned at University Courtyard, including a barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m.
Thursday. University President John D. Welty, Dr. Paul M. Oliaro, the
vice president for student affairs, and other top Fresno State officials
will speak at 5 o’clock, and the Bulldog Marching Band will perform at
6.
An information fair is scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, where
campus clubs and organizations and vendors will offer information. A
workshop at 4 p.m. by ILovetoCreate (formerly Duncan Ceramics) will
provide dorm decorating ideas.
At 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Graves Hall lobby, parents can ask
questions of University Courtyard senior staff members.
