The
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University, Fresno
begins its 2009-10 schedule at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, with a slide
lecture by Doug Hansen, “Bringing Mother Goose to California.”
Hansen, a professor of art and design at Fresno State, published “Mother
Goose in California” (Heyday Books/$16.95) in April. Hansen’s lavishly
illustrated children’s book sets a wide variety of California animals in
settings throughout the Golden State, arranged alphabetically with each
letter tied to a verse from Mother Goose rhyme.
Hansen will discuss the several years’ process for creating his book,
which has won extensive critical acclaim.
Hansen’s presentation begins a series of activities that will bring
lectures about the late photographer Ansel Adams, idealized pasts
influencing the present, bats, contemporary memoir writing and
Volga-Germans.
The Osher institute also sponsors a series of short courses ranging from
evolution and creationism, weather and near-death experiences and pop
culture to aging and memory, spices, the economy and Abraham Lincoln.
Field trips are available to wineries, art venues for ceramics and glass
blowing and a theatrical production.
Osher is designed for people 50 and older who have the time and an
interest in learning and exploring across a broad range of subjects.
General membership costs $55 individual ($90 couple), which includes
admission to all six general sections, the opportunity to sign up for
short courses and field trips, free campus parking and Henry Madden
Library privileges. Associate memberships that provide more limited
program access are $15 per person.
Additional fees are charged for the field trips ($20-$75) and short
courses ($15-$30).
Fresno State’s Osher program, which is operated by the Division of
Continuing and Global Education, is partly funded by the Bernard Osher
Foundation.
