Dr.
Peter Mehas has been named the new chair of the Centennial
Leadership Committee at California State University, Fresno.
Mehas, who has
served as a member of the committee since it was formed in 2008,
replaces former chair Bob Oliver, who found it necessary to
withdraw.
"Dr. Mehas is a
Fresno State alum and longtime leader in the community," said
President John D. Welty. "He will provide passionate leadership for
this effort."
Mehas also serves
as a member of the California State University board of trustees.
He received his
bachelor's degree from Fresno State in 1962 and played on Fresno
State's undefeated 1961 Mercy Bowl team. He earned his master's
degree from UCLA in 1967, and his doctorate in education from the
University of Southern California in 1979.
He is a former
teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and Fresno County
superintendent of schools.
Fresno State's
centennial celebration will begin in spring 2010 and continue
through the university's 100th commencement ceremony in May 2011.
Major events will include a centennial 10K run in conjunction with
Fresno City College's centennial, a vintage car show, a centennial
book release party, a parade and the "Tailgate of the Century" in
fall 2010. In addition, various events will be planned throughout
the year by the university's schools, colleges, athletics and
various organizations.
The Centennial
Committee has established an e-mail account to capture "Fresno State
Memories" from alums and friends of the university. Memories may be
sent to fresnostate100@csufresno.edu or by mail to Centennial,
California State University, Fresno, 5200 N. Barton ML 48, Fresno,
CA 93740. These stories may be used for media projects and scholarly
activities related to Fresno State's 2011 centennial, such as the
upcoming centennial Web site and centennial book, as well as for
other university purposes, including scholarship, research,
promotions, alumni activities and outreach.
