Normal School magazine begins second year of national distribution

The Normal SchoolThe Normal School, a nationally distributed literary magazine published by The Press at California State University, Fresno, begins its second year with an issue featuring short fiction, nonfiction and poetry from authors across the country.

Pieces in the fall 2009 issue range across such subjects as extraordinary rendition, BB King, George Plimpton, the afterlife, poodles and a conversation with novelist Margot Livesey. Ten poets contributed work and there are two short stories that rely as much on visual impact as on words.

Steve Yarbrough, the former James and Coke Hallowell Distinguished Professor in Creative Writing at Fresno State and now teaching at Emerson College in Massachusetts, is one of the authors. Others include Adam Braver, Tom Bissell, Dinty W. Moore, Patricia Henley and Mary Yukari Waters, who are based in Rhode Island, Oregon, Ohio, Maryland and Southern California, respectively

The three co-editors reflect the geographic scope of journal. Steven Church is an award-winning author and a professor in Fresno State’s Master of Fine Arts program in the Department of English. Sophie Beck is an author based in San Francisco. Matt Roberts, who teaches at the University of New Orleans, is a writer whose work was nominated for a prestigious Pushcart Prize.

The publication began a year ago with support from Fresno State’s English department, College of Arts and Humanities, Division of Graduate Studies and Office of the Provost.

The Normal School is published twice each academic year and is available by subscription, through national chain bookstores and university bookstores for $5.

The magazine asks its writing readers to submit work for consideration in The Normal School. Entries will be accepted through Feb. 12.

Details about submissions, subscriptions and other information about The Normal School are available at www.thenormalschool.com.
