Stephen F. SotomayorStephen Sotomayor joins University Advisory Board
Stephen F. Sotomayor, chief of staff to Fresno City Council Member Andreas Borgeas, has been appointed to the University Advisory Committee by California State University, Fresno President John D. Welty. Board members are appointed from the community to provide the president with advice about the improvement and development of the university. Sotomayor is the lead policy adviser and manages the operations and staff of Borgeas’ office, including constituent relations for Borgeas’ northwest Fresno district.

Aquatics center construction set to begin
Construction will begin in coming weeks on a $7.5 million swimming and diving complex at California State University, Fresno. Bids on the construction project will be opened Thursday, Feb. 4. Site work is under way to relocate and prepare utilities for the project. The aquatics center should be completed in September, in time to be used for classes and by the Bulldog swimming and diving team for 2010-11 competition.

Fresno State joins CSU in robust fundraising year
The California State University CSU Annual Report on External Support presented to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Jan. 27, shows continued strong financial contributions to the university despite worsening economic times in 2008-09. At California State University, Fresno, gifts totaling $53.4 million were recorded by the Campaign for Fresno State – the greatest amount ever donated to the university in one year.

Welty today urged faculty and staff to remember and celebrate campus successes of the past year, even as they work to overcome challenges in 2010. At the annual Spring Faculty and Staff Assembly on campus, Welty enumerated several high points of the past year, including opening the new Madden Library, a national award for outstanding community service and a $29.4 million cash gift for the Campaign for Fresno State. Peach Blossom Festival is March 18-19
The 52nd annual Peach Blossom Festival of Oral Interpretation will be held March 18 and 19 at California State University, Fresno, attracting an estimated 6,000 pupils from nearly 200 San Joaquin Valley elementary schools. Youngsters at schools from Livingston to Delano will participate in this year’s festival, which is hosted by the Department of Communication, housed in the College of Arts and Humanities. More ...

Discount deadline Jan. 31 for Winemaster's Weekend at Tenaya Lodge
The ninth annual Fresno State Winemaster's Weekend will be held March 5-6 at the Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite, where experts on grapevine grafting and pairing wines with fine chocolate will be featured attractions this year. The four-diamond resort in the Sierra National Forest, just two miles south of the Highway 41 entrance to Yosemite National Park, partners with California State University, Fresno’s Department of Viticulture and Enology for the two-day affair.  More ...

 

Common Threads awardees selected for April 16 honor
Six women representing Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced and Tulare counties will be honored for their agricultural, philanthropic and community service at the 14th annual Common Threads luncheon on April 16 at California State University, Fresno. The Common Threads Award recipients for 2010 are: Barbara Bigelow of Madera, Robin Rogers-Dale of Reedley, Judy Walt Jameson of Tulare, Sue Lafferty of Hanford, Jean Okuye of Livingston and Susie Snedden of Maricopa. More ..
