Dr. Nagy N. BengiaminNagy N. Bengiamin
(Electrical and Computer Engineering) has been awarded the university's top teaching honor. Dr. Dennis Nef, interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, named Dr. Bengiamin as recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award. The Provost’s Awards also honored the following: Monica Fusich, reference librarian in the Henry Madden Library, recipient of the Technology in Education Award; Dr. Carol Fry Bohlin, professor of curriculum and instruction, recipient of the Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Award; Donald M. Priest, associate professor and chair of mass communication and journalism, recipient of the Faculty Service Award; and Helene Joseph-Weil, professor of music, recipient of the Distinguished Achievement in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Award. In addition, six faculty members were recognized with the Promising New Faculty award, which recognizes exemplary achievements in teaching, research/creative activities and/or service among nontenured, tenure-track faculty. Angelica Carpenter
(Library) is the featured speaker at the St. Helena, Calif. Public Library on May 13 for Elsie’s Book Club in honor of Children’s Book Week (May 11-17). Her presentation includes discussion onhow she became an author and also her writing and research techniques with examples from her biographies. Carpenter is curator of the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature. She is also the author or co-author of four illustrated biographies for young people and president of the International Wizard of Oz.

 

Michael Jenkins
(Engineering) was honored honored with the Professional Achievement Award from the Marquette University College of Engineering and the Marquette University Alumni Association in a ceremony on April 24. Jenkins graduated from the College of Engineering in 1980. He is internationally recognized for his work in standards and codes of advanced materials such as composite and monolithic structural ceramics.

 

George B. KauffmanGeorge B. Kauffman
(Chemistry, emeritus) is featured in “Who’s Who in America,” 2009 edition, and “Who’s Who in the World,” 2009 edition, both published by Marquis Who’s Who Publications, New Providence, New Jersey. He published, “Hugh R. Butt, M.D. (1910-2008): Physician, Scientist, Educator: Pioneer in Clotting and Anticlotting Techniques” (with Jean-Pierre Adloff, Honorary Professor, Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France) in The Chemical Educator (February, 2009). This article was also featured in “Gastroenterology in the News,” Gasterology (February, 2009). He also published “Tomorrow’s Chemistry Today: Concepts in Nanoscience, Organic Materials, and Environmental Chemistry” in Angewandte Chemie: A Journal of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, International Edition (in English) and Angewandte Chemie: Eine Zuschrift der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (in German) on September 29, 2008. He also published “An Irrational Fallacy [post hoc ergo propter hoc],” November 1, 2008, in Centralvalley.com and “Valley Voices: Birthday is the right time to study Darwin" in the Fresno Bee (February 7, 2009).

Miguel Pérez
(Public Health) won the 2009 American Association for Health Education (AAHE) Professional Service to Health Education award. Pérez was recognized for his service to the AAHE, professional contributions to health education, and service and leadership within the profession. He is the recipient of three Fulbright awards. Jennifer SobieralskiJennifer Sobieralski
(Gibson Farm Market) has been promoted to enterprise product marketing manager/Gibson Farm Market manager for the Agricultural Foundation. The move expands her job from Gibson Farm Market manager, which she has held since August 2006, to also oversee marketing of all products produced by students in the University Agricultural Laboratory, including the award-winning Fresno State Wines and Estate Reserve 2007 extra virgin olive oil. The move helps fill the vacancy that resulted when Jessup Wiley, enterprise product marketing manager, left the university last month. See the full story here.
