JumpstartJumpstart hosts preschool students
at the new Madden Library

Children and families from Wesley Head Start visited the new Henry Madden Library on March 28 as Jumpstart at Fresno State hosted a "Story Time at Starbucks" event. Jumpstart Corps Members read The Rainbow Fish and provided materials for the children to create their own special rainbow fish. The families also joined their children and the Corps members in singing songs as they enjoyed the view from the Starbucks lounge. In addition to offering space for the event, Starbucks donated drinks and pastries.

The Corps Members were able to highlight the Fresno State library while encouraging the love of reading. “It was great to see the children and families enjoy learning outside of the classroom environment,” says Jumpstart Team Leader Alex Maciel.

Following the event at Starbucks, Jumpstart Corps Members led the children and families on a tour of the library. The children were amazed at the size of the building and were excited to see so many books.

Jocelyn GoldringJocelyn Goldring honored as
University Student Volunteer of the Year

Jocelyn Goldring, a senior liberal studies major, was announced as the University Student Volunteer of the Year at the annual Hands Across the Valley Awards Luncheon hosted by Hands On Central California.

Goldring was selected for the award for her outstanding service to the community. She provided more than 1,200 volunteer hours in the last year at Camp Taylor. The camp provides free summer camp for children born with congenital heart disease and their families. Goldring has volunteered at the camp every summer since 2003. She serves as the camp’s activities director and counselor. Three years ago she started an annual fundraiser that has raised more than $180,000 for the camp.

“It is amazing what this camp does for these children," says Goldring. "I’ve seen it in my own sister. Since attending Camp Taylor, she is so much more confident and outgoing. It has really made a difference in her life.”

In nominating Jocelyn for this award, Dr. Katie Dyer stated, “Jocelyn’s commitment is extraordinary in its depth, endurance, and in the level of professionalism required.”

In addition to winning the award, Goldring also received a $1,500 scholarship from the Marc and Marjorie Radin Community Service Scholarship fund.

Other finalists for the award were Arica Washington, whose most notable service was with the West Fresno Boys and Girls Club, and Laura Rodriguez, whose service has been with a number of agencies, including Bulldog Pantry and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Arbor DayArboretum Web site, tree planting
help celebrate Arbor Day

Fresno State staff, faculty, administrators and students joined community members planting more than 50 maple trees along the Maple Mall on campus as a celebration of Arbor Day and the university’s Tree Campus USA designation. The university also launched a Web site dedicated to the arboretum with maps of a tree walk (4,000 trees and more than 100 varieties) and information about special collections and gardens around the 388-acre academic campus. The tree planting attracted an estimated 100 volunteers whose work was completed just an hour after it began, says Ryan McGaughey, the university’s manager of grounds and arboretum. Visit the arboretum Web site at http://www.csufresno.edu/arboretum.

Final blood drive of academic year a success
An estimated 610 people donated blood during the final blood drive of the academic year. Their generous donation has the potential to help 1,830 patients in our local hospitals.

This academic year a total of 2,689 people donated blood during the four Fresno State blood drives. A new record was set for the largest three-day on-campus blood drive during the tribute drive to student Rose Hennig in November when 845 people donated.

The on-campus blood drives are coordinated by the Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning and sponsored by the Kennel Bookstore, the Student Recreation Center and Colorado Grill. The support of many people make the on-campus blood drives successful. A special thank-you is due to University Courtyard, University Courtyard Dining Hall, University Student Union, University Police, Traffic Operations, Plant Operations and the Marketing 100S classes for their contributions.

Faculty and staff encouraged to report personal service hours
The end of the academic year brings a firestorm of data collection at the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning. The center is engaged in collecting data representing the number of people engaged in service as well as the number of hours that have been provided to the community over the past academic year. Last year, data demonstrating a staggering 670,000 hours of service was provided through service-learning courses, internships, community service activities, and regular volunteerism. Faculty and staff are encouraged to report their own service at this time as well.

The Richter Center is proud to announce a new and efficient way for Fresno State employees to track their hours year-round. Reporting your service is easy using the new “My Volunteer Record” feature in your my Fresno State account. Simply log into your account, select “My volunteer Record” in the Employee Self Service section, then enter the dates, hours, and location of your service. A short instructional video provides step-by-step directions on how to use this function. Visit the Richter Center Web site to see the video or follow this link to the video player.

For help reporting your service without going online, please contact Mellissa Jessen at the Richter Center to request a paper survey by e-mailing mjessen@csufresno.edu or call 278-6986.

Record your volunteer hours for 2008-09 by Friday, May 8 and be entered into a drawing to win a $25.00 gift card. A total of 12 prizes will be awarded.
