Shaffer starts Red Thread Studio
Susan Shaffer, research analyst for University Development, has it all in the bag ... the tote bag, that is. Her original design for a reversible tote is turning a hobby into a possible business venture. Available at Quilters' Paradise on Pollasky Avenue in Clovis, the tote capitalizes on the "going green" trend for stores that encourage shoppers to bring in their own bags.
"I saw a contest and entered it with an original design," Shaffer says. "The designs didn't have to be original, but mine was. The prize was $25 for the top three totes, and I won one of them." See the full story here.

Anthony P. Radford

Joan Sharma
(Art Department), who works in the mediums of oil on canvas and photography, created a work titled “Fields” for Warnor’s Center for the Performing Arts as part its ongoing public art project series. The piece, on display through February, shows her exploration of subtle natural forces as they operate within and around the world of form with monochromatic earth tones that reference the fields of the San Joaquin Valley. Some of the panels in the “Fields” series resemble magnetic filings as they align themselves along field lines near a magnet and silently resonate with energy. Sharma recently also published Madhubani, Mithila Artists, a print-on-demand book that includes photographs she took during her visit with artists in the state of Bihar, India. It is available at http://www.blurb.com/my/book/detail/1162852.
William Skuban
(History Department) has published a chapter entitled “La apertura y el cierre de la frontera chileno-peruana” in the book Ampliando miradas: Chile y su historia en un tiempo global (Santiago de Chile: RIL editores, 2009). The book is a collaborative effort between Chilean and North American historians who examine Chile’s modern history through the lenses of nationalism, transnationalism, and globalization. Skuban’s chapter examines the contested frontier between Chile and Peru, situating the problem within the recent literature on nationalism and borderlands that conceptualizes frontiers not as limits but as zones of interpenetration between distinct societies.
John D. Welty
(President) wrote "Celebrating successes even as we tackle challenges," which was published in the Opinion section of the Jan. 27 issue of the Fresno Bee. The column addresses the need to provide quality education for students despite difficulties caused by the widening gap between state support and costs. It urged the community to contact legislators asking them to reinvest in higher education. "The Latin inscription on Fresno State's seal translates as 'Receive the light that you may give it forth,'" Welty wrote. "We intend to do everything to make sure that light at Fresno State shines bright and is passed to this generation and those to come. " See the full story here.
