Jordan gift benefactor in top 20 of nation's philanthropists in 2009
Dee Jordan, benefactor of the $29.4 million cash gift to the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at Fresno State, is No.17 on the list of the nation's top donors for 2009. As a result of her gift, the college was named for the Jordan family.
The nation's top givers are featured in the Feb. 8 edition of the Chronicle of Philanthropy and the online Slate magazine.
While philanthropic gifts - both in size and number - were sharply down nationally in 2009, the Campaign for Fresno State enjoyed its best year, collecting $53.4 million in the period 2008-2009. The Jordan gift buoyed that total but other significant gifts were received as well.
In addition to her gift to Fresno State, in 2009 Mrs. Jordan also gave to two hospitals in the Bay Area as well as to national funds fighting Alzheimer's, heart disease and cancer
Aetna provides gift for Wellness Mobile Unit
Aetna recently provided a $33,000 gift to the Student Health and Psychological Services unit. The gift will create an Aetna Wellness Mobile Unit to share health information and conduct wellness events at locations across the campus. Fresno site manager Linda Machado will represent Aetna at the event.
Previous gifts from Aetna support the Aetna Wellness Resource Center, which includes a library of health-related information, computers for student and faculty research and educational activities, and a relaxation lounge with health-testing equipment and other services. The Aetna Wellness Mobile Unit will allow the university to reach students where they are on campus, expanding outreach of health services.
Through one of its employee resource groups — Aetna Hispanic Network — Aetna has been a longtime partner with the university, providing service to the Chicano Alumni of Fresno State for events that include an annual scholarship banquet and Los Niños Holiday Literacy Festival.
Fresno State joins CSU in robust fundraising year
The California State University Annual Report on External Support presented to the Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Jan. 27, shows continued strong financial contributions to the university despite worsening economic times in 2008-09.
At California State University, Fresno, gifts totaling $53.4 million were recorded by the Campaign for Fresno State – the greatest amount ever donated to the university in one year.
During 2008-09, Fresno State received the largest single cash gift in CSU history – $29.4 million from the Jordan family estate – resulting in the CSU trustees naming the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.
Mary Anna Dunn, the university’s associate vice president for development, said, “It’s gratifying that to date over 21,000 donors have given to the campaign. With our centennial activities beginning in April, we look forward to connecting with new friends and reconnecting with alumni so that they can be proud of the vitality and vision of Fresno State.”
