Welty visits Fresno churches for Super Sunday

Welty on Super Sunday

After speaking for Super Sunday, Fresno State President John D. Welty meets with (left to right) Emogene Carson-Butler, an administrative assistant at Fresno State and a member of Fellowship Baptist; Kayla Hurd, Carson-Butler's daughter and an 8th grade student; Tanaya Clark, a first-year student at Fresno City College; and Tanisha Sorrell, a recent high school graduate. Five Fresno churches were visited by Welty and other Fresno State representatives — as part of the annual CSU Super Sunday program that reaches out to African Americans throughout California. The program, which began in Northern and Southern California in 2005, was expanded to Fresno for the first time this year, at President Welty's urging. Madden Library
celebrates first anniversary

The new and expanded Henry Madden Library at California State University , Fresno is a year old and celebrated Feb. 24, with a party that included an iced replica of the building itself and hundreds of cupcakes for those attending.

Just a week earlier, the library recorded its millionth visit when nursing student Amanda Tang of Elk Grove, a junior, came through the front door and was presented with gifts.

Tang, 20, whose hometown is Elk Grove, said she frequently comes to the library to study — by herself or with classmates in the group study room. "As a nursing student, I pretty much live in the library," she said.

Tang joined the birthday celebration and helped symbolically cut the centerpiece library replica created by Culinology® students in the Food and Nutrition program.

Hammer-Brown supports Silent Garden
Linda Hammer-Brown (M.S. ’89) and her husband David will be racing towards the finish line on May 2 at the Avenue of the Giants Marathon to support Fresno State’s Silent Garden. The Silent Garden project, focusing on cultivating communication for the deaf/hard of hearing, is currently raising funds to endow a chair for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Studies. Hammer-Brown, who is a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing for Madera County Office of Education at Howard Educational Center, acknowledged that there are only a handful of colleges in the country focusing on deaf education and such a gift to Fresno State would be an amazing resource for our region. For additional information on supporting the Silent Garden, contact Dana Lucka, director of Development for the College of Health and Human Services at 278-3603 or danaz@csufresno.edu.

Fresno Art Museum asks Fresno State to explore museum’s future
The Board of Trustees of the Fresno Art Museum has voted to enter into an “exploration” period with Fresno State to allow the university to examine how to support and expand the viability of the Fresno Art Museum. Among the possibilities is that the university acquire the collections and assume operations of Fresno Art Museum at its existing location near Clinton Avenue and First Street in east-central Fresno. The Fresno Art Museum has been an active participant in California State University Summer Arts programs hosted by Fresno State. See the full story here.

Zimbra e-mail issues reported with Firefox 3.6, iPhones
ITS reports it is trying to resolve issues on two fronts involving the campus’ Zimbra e-mail and calendaring system for staff and faculty.

Briefly, here’s what’s happening:

  • Firefox 3.6 was released in January, but ITS is not encouraging this browser’s use until several issues are resolved. The recommended temporary fix is to return to Firefox 3.5 (info at https://help.csufresno.edu/facstaff/software/firefox/ff36to35.php) or use Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 in compatibility mode.
  • Users are experiencing multiple issues synchronizing iPhones with Zimbra calendars, which ITS has reported to Apple. Most problems involve recurring meetings. ITS recommends limiting use of iPhone for Zimbra calendars to viewing and accepting. The synchronization issue can be resolved by following the steps at https://help.csufresno.edu/facstaff/collaboration/mobile/iphoneactivesyncreset.php. However, iPhones may lose synchronization again if used to decline, delete or modify meetings.
