(Arne Nixon Center) had her remarks on the new children's book The Emperor's Army included on the front flap of the book's dust jacket. The story introduces children to the famous underground terra-cotta army that China's emperor had made to guard his grave.

 

James Cypher

James Cypher
(Economics) was awarded a two-year (serial grant) Fulbright Scholar Research Award from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. He will research the topic of “Brazil’s National Industrial Base: Manufacturing Capability, Industrial Policy, and the National System of Innovation—Lessons for Mexico?"  Cypher will be affiliated with the graduate program in economics at the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, during the fall semesters of 2010 and 2011. Jill FieldsJill Fields
(History) was featured in the February issue of Cosmopolitan as an expert for the article "The Thong Is Dead!" in which she discussed the changing trends in women's wardrobes. Fields is the author of An Intimate Affair: Women, Lingerie, and Sexuality, which explores the history and meaning of intimate apparel for American women, investigating topics such as the transition from corsets to girdles in the 1920s and the specialized meaning of black lingerie that developed during the twentieth century. Fields is writing a second book on the history of clothing, which focuses on the global “fashion-industrial complex.” She also is teaching a class on “Fashion and History” this semester.

 

Martina Granados
(Upward Bound) is the recipient of the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel’s Steve Holeman Award. Granados has worked with Upward Bound programs at Fresno State since 1991 and was appointed the director in 2001. Upward Bound assists low-income, first-generation, college-bound students to further their education beyond high school The Holeman Award honors the memory of one of the Western Association’s founders. It recognizes a director’s dedication to educational excellence and equity, concern for developing students’ potential and example of professional administration. See the full story here.

Dr. MahalikNitaigour Prem Mahalik
(Industrial Technology) recently engaged the graduate students of his class in several community service activities in and around Fresno. The students participated in four different service learning activities such as (1) in the advisory meeting of the Hoover High’s Engineering, Architecture and Electronics program, (2) Community Food Bank’s food distribution drive activities at Firebaugh, (3) educating the learners at the College of Sequoia, Visalia, and (4) seminar presentation to the students of the department of Electrical Engineering Technology, Fresno City College on the topic subjects nanotechnology, global warming, biotechnology, and steel-making process.

(Advancement Services) presented "Social Media + Beyond," which included a component on the "I am Fresno State!" project, to two groups last month: West Coast Marketing Group (Feb. 2, 1010; San Jose) and the Fresno Advertising Federation (Feb. 17, 2010; Fresno).
