Fresno State students spring into action
with Alternative Spring Break

This spring break, some Fresno State students will be doing things a little differently. The Alternative Spring Break program, supported by a partnership between USU Productions and the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning, features two teams of ten students who will participate in community service March 27-30. Each team is facilitated by two student leaders. One team, led by Jonathan Munoz and Maricela Vargas, will partner with Fresno Street Saints, a community organization in southwest Fresno. Service with Fresno Street Saints will include working with the elderly and youth in the area. The second team, led by Dana Elkins and Lorena Lozano, will partner with Rotary Storyland to continue work rebuilding park displays. Both teams are supported by alumna volunteer Loan Le.

Le, Elkins, and Lozano participated in last year's pilot Alternative Spring Break program and have returned to provide leadership and guidance to new program participants. They are joined by Jonathan and Maricela who currently serve as Richter Center Ambassadors, a group of students dedicated to supporting and promoting the university's community engagement efforts. Participants in the program will document their experience online to share with the Fresno State community. In addition to USU Productions and the Richter Center, this program is also supported by IRA funds, which will provide transportation for the teams to their respective service sites as well as participation in a pre-service team building training at the E.D.G.E. Challenge Ropes Course.

For more information contact Mellissa Jessen in the Richter Center or Shawna Blair with USU Productions.

Kids DayNext Kids Day March 9
More than 1,000 Fresno State volunteers are expected to hit the streets on Tuesday, March 9 for Kids Day. The volunteers will sell a special Kid’s Day edition of the Fresno Bee for $1. All proceeds will benefit the children and families served by Children’s Hospital Central California. Fresno State volunteers are expected to sell from all intersections along Shaw and Cedar Avenues that surround campus. Last year campus volunteers raised just shy of $30,000 during this one-day fundraiser. Eevent organizers hope that the Fresno State team will exceed the $30,000 mark this year. If you are interested in volunteering for Kids Day or would like to purchase a newspaper please contact the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning at 278-7079 or email rdelport@csufresno.edu. Pre-orders are accepted.

expoVolunteer Expo offers opportunities to serve
Hundreds of students, faculty and staff attended the Volunteer Service Expo, organized by the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning. More than four dozen community organizations provided information about volunteer opportunities for the campus community as the university strives to register 1 million volunteer hours during the year. The Richter Center encourages faculty and staff to report their volunteer service in the community by using the My Volunteer Record link on the Employee Self-Service menu at mycsufresno.edu.
