A very busy first week of February for Bulldog fans
If you’re a fan of Fresno State Athletics, February is one of the busiest months, with competition available on campus in seven men’s and women’s sports.
It begins at noon Thursday, Feb. 3, with women’s tennis vs. St. Mary’s at the Wathen Tennis Center near Cedar Avenue and Bulldog Lane.
That evening at 7 o’clock, men’s basketball under Coach Steve Cleveland hosts Western Athletic Conference rival New Mexico State at the Save Mart Center. An added attraction is the popular halftime performance by Break the Barriers.
On Friday, Feb. 4, women’s tennis is back in action at 1 p.m. against Arizona and men’s tennis entertains San Diego State at 5 p.m.
Men’s basketball returns to the floor at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, in WAC play against Louisiana Tech. For that game, Fresno State staff and faculty get one free ticket with valid ID. The evening will have a Centennial theme, celebrating the university’s first “100 Years of Excellence,” by providing the first 100 fans with a Centennial-themed button. The first 2,000 fans will receive free shirts.
There’s more action Sunday, Feb. 6, when women’s tennis entertains WAC rival Nevada and men’s tennis hosts Texas Tech at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
And the busy first week of the busy month concludes at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, with a Fresno State vs. Cal State Bakersfield men’s basketball game with an Ag Night theme.
Men’s basketball also plays at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in an ESPN Bracket Buster game and again Feb. 24 vs. Boise State in the second half of a doubleheader with the Bulldog women’s team.
Men’s tennis returns at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 11 vs. Loyola Marymount and 2 p.m. Feb. 12 vs. Pacific.
Women’s tennis will host Sacramento State at noon and Gonzaga at 6:05, both on Feb. 19.
Women’s basketball plays at home Feb. 10, 12 and 24
Bulldog women’s basketball returns to the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 to host Western Athletic Conference rival Boise State.
It will be Greek Night, with the sorority or fraternity bringing the most spectators wins a dinner with the basketball teams. A Break the Barriers performance is scheduled at half time.
The rest of the women’s basketball schedule this month:
- Feb. 12 vs. Utah State at 2 p.m.; Centennial Game with first 100 fans getting Centennial pins; National Girls and Women in Sports Day with presentation of letters to former Bulldog varsity female athletes from the 1970s.
- Feb. 24 vs. Idaho at 6 p.m.; to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, $1 of every ticket sold goes to Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Central Valley.
Softball season begins this month
Collegiate softball’s winningest coach, Margie Wright, begins her 26th season at Fresno State with a career 1,386 victories and high expectations for another successful year for the Bulldogs.
First up at Bulldog Diamond is a doubleheader Feb. 12 against Sacramento State. First pitch is scheduled at 1 and 3 p.m. For the home opener, there will be free ice cream served by the women’s tennis team and fans who bring a ticket from the Feb. 7 men’s basketball game get a free ticket to the doubleheader.
Baseball begins with Feb. 12 Alumni Game
Coach Mike Batesole’s baseball Bulldogs open their season at 2:05 p.m. Feb. 12 at Beiden Field with the annual Alumni Game, in which stars from past years return for some entertaining action.
And the preseason collegiate home opener is the following weekend when Gonzaga visits for games at 6:05 p.m. Feb. 18 and 19, followed by Oregon State at 6:05 p.m. Feb. 20 and 21.
The Bulldogs close out February competition with a three-game set against Pepperdine at 6:05 p.m. Feb. 25, 26 and 27.
Men's volleyball club starts fast
Fresno State's men's volleyball club team swept through the North/South California Cup competition in Azusa, beating UC San Diego, Cal Poly and UC Davis.
Coach Dr. Brian Tsukimura (Biology) reports the 5-0 start matched 2009's when the team became national champions. The team plays its home games at the South Gym. Admission is $5 general, $2 14-18 years old and free under 14.
The Redwave plays at home this month against Monterey Peninsula on Saturday, Feb. 5, and Feb. 26 against Cal Poly. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Equestrian schedules top competition
Bulldog equestrian riders will compete against some of the top collegiate teams at the Students Horse Center near Woodrow and Barstow avenues.
