As Fresno State prepares to celebrate the graduation of its 100th class, the university has time to reflect on its contribution to the Valley.

"This year has provided an opportunity to reflect on the university’s past as we celebrate the Centennial," says President John D. Welty. "Indeed, it’s been a wonderful year in which we have learned more about how schools, colleges, and other major areas of the university were formed, and the impact that they have had in this region."

This Commencement on May 21 is of particular note because it recognizes 100 years of tradition and accomplishment.
"We will have a very special day," says Welty. "It’s amazing when you realize our first graduating class was 32, and this year we will graduate over 5,000 students."

Fresno State began as Fresno Normal School, a state school for training teachers. The first class met Sept. 11, 1911, and Fresno State was the region’s only four-year public college until the late 1950s. Through the decades, the university has kept the spirit of education alive, offering training in scores of fields.

"Fresno State truly has had a major impact on central California and has transformed many, many lives," says Welty. "It’s a great opportunity for us to celebrate what a difference we make in central California."
