The 33rd annual Ag Boosters Barbecue will add to the $656,000 the event has raised over the years to benefit students and programs in California State University Fresno’s Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.

This year’s fundraiser, 4-8 p.m. Sept. 12 at Rancho Vista del Rio (Borba Ranch) in Madera County, will showcase the fruit, vegetables, nuts, dairy, meat and other food products grown, processed and marketed by Fresno State students. The event is hosted by the Ag One Foundation at Fresno State and the California Women for Agriculture (CWA).

In addition to supporting the university, proceeds will help the CWA’s educational efforts.

The affair includes jazz played by Fresno State students and tastings of Fresno State award-winning sausage, almonds, raisins and grapes. Fresno State Winery vintages will be served, and there will be tastings of award-winning Fresno State extra-virgin olive oils.

CWA will host a country store with handmade arts, crafts and baked goods. Also planned are live and silent auctions and a drawing for the Ag One Fantasy Vacation raffle, offering a choice of destinations including Alaska, Hawaii, Scotland, the Azores and Italy.

Since 1979, Ag One has provided 3,100 students with more than $2.1 million in scholarships and grants from an endowment that has grown to more than $14 million. In the 2010-11 academic year, $475,000 will be awarded.

CWA uses funds raised by the barbecue for education and legislative programs and to endow $100,000 in annual scholarship awards.

Tickets are $50 per person, $450 for table of 10 if purchased by Friday, Sept. 3; $60 per person, $550 per table, thereafter. For tickets, contact the Ag One Foundation at 559.278.4266 or click the link below.

Dr. Mary Barakzai of the Central California Center for Excellence in Nursing at California State University, Fresno and Beverly Miller, a lecturer in the university’s Department of Nursing, will enter the Central San Joaquin Valley Nursing Hall of Fame.

The two will be inducted during the seventh annual Nursing Hall of Fame Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. Sept. 16 at the Smittcamp Alumni House on campus.

This award honors the distinctive careers of nurse leaders who have promoted the profession through a lifetime of work and experience within the region – Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties.

Barakzai has worked more than 35 years as a family nurse practitioner, nurse midwife and educator. She joined the Fresno State faculty in 2003.

Barakzai has influenced families, students and legislators through her clinical practice, teaching and writing. She also has developed and implemented advanced-practice curriculum in Thailand and Colombia.

Miller has worked more than 40 years as a nurse and 20 helping prepare students for nursing careers. She has been a Fresno State faculty member since 2007.

Miller has developed a curriculum embraced by nurses across California and her influence on behalf of children’s health has extended to national education and credentialing committees.

Created in 2004, the Valley Nursing Hall of Fame is a collaborative project involving nursing leaders throughout the region. It is sponsored by Fresno State’s College of Health and Human Services, the Nursing Leadership Council of the Central San Joaquin Valley and the Mu Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

The cost of the luncheon is $40 per person, and tables of 10 are available. A $20 no-show fee will be billed for reservations that are not honored. Seating is limited. The reservation deadline is Sept. 8.

Two California State University, Fresno professors and scientists in the College of Science and Mathematics have been awarded competitive research awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling $500,000.

Dr. Madhusudan Katti, a geography professor, received a $300,000 grant for research focusing on regional and global environmental changes amid rapid urban growth and declining water resources.

Dr. Hwan Youn, an assistant professor of biology, was awarded $200,000 to support his research on microbial genomics, with specific emphasis on E. coli.

Dr. Thomas McClanahan, associate vice president for Research and Sponsored Programs, said the awards underscore the quality of Fresno State’s faculty and their growing capabilities to attract major support for important research. “Our faculty expertise in research is growing rapidly, and new developments in the sciences are particularly promising,” he said.

Katti’s study, a collaboration with other Fresno State and external researchers, has special relevance to the San Joaquin Valley, where urban growth poses challenges to water resources and to sustaining agriculture, the region’s key industry.

Key study areas include the impact of residential water use on urban landscape, habitat structure and biodiversity, and the response of urban water users to water scarcity and government conservation efforts such as metering water in Fresno. The study will help inform public education and policy making around a compelling resource issue throughout the West.

Katti, earned his doctorate at the University of California, San Diego and joined the Fresno State faculty in 2004

Youn will use specialized equipment funded by the NSF to conduct laboratory research with two graduate and undergraduate research assistants who will receive valuable working experience to complement classroom studies. He also will involve more than 50 graduate and undergraduate students as participants in the study.

Youn earned bachelor, master and doctoral degrees at the Seoul National University in Korea. He joined Fresno State in 2008.

Dr. Andrew Rogerson, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, said that for Youn to have this award so early in his career is testament to his research ability.

Katti’s award, Rogerson said, is due in part to training through the Research Infrastructure for Minority Institution project, financed by a multimillion-dollar award to Fresno State from the National Institutes of Health for equipment and faculty training.

“Both awards demonstrate the commitment of college faculty to establish externally funded laboratories for the pursuit of quality research involving Fresno State students,” said Rogerson.

For the second straight summer, the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market at California State University, Fresno has placed among the Top 20 small farm markets in a national contest.

The American Farmland Trust annually conducts the America’s Favorite Farm Market™ online popularity contest, dividing the competition into Boutique, Small, Medium and Large categories. Fans of the markets vote over several weeks for their favorite.

The Fresno State market ranked 18th in the 2010 voting and was the only one in California that made the Top 20. The market finished second last year.

The Gibson Farm Market is at the corner of Barstow and Chestnut avenues on the campus amidst the university’s Agricultural Laboratory, a 1,000-acre farm.

The student-operated market sells student-produced fruits, nuts, vegetables, dairy products, meats and wine from the first-in-the-nation on-campus commercial winery. Money earned through the sales is plowed back into the farm, where students get hands-on experience in the latest growing, irrigation and harvest techniques, often with industry partners.

The farm also is a research center, enabling students to participate in studies of food and water innovations with applications locally and worldwide.

The market is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. More information is available at 559.278.4511 or at http://www.auxiliary.com/AGF/farmmarket/index.shtml.

Jeff Phillips, a senior at California State University, Fresno, was part of the Emmy-winning cinematography team on the long-running CBS-TV reality competition series “Survivor.”

“Survivor” host Jeff Probst also won the Emmy as host for a reality or reality-competition program.

Phillips is a 22-year-old student majoring in mass communication and journalism with an emphasis in electronic media production. He was in Nicaragua working on the next “Survivor” series when the Creative Arts Emmys for technical achievement were announced Aug. 21.

The major acting, writing and directing Emmys were presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Sunday, Aug. 29, in a national TV broadcast.

The cast and crew threw a party in Nicaragua to celebrate the Emmy, which was flown in for the occasion.

It’s the fourth “Survivor” that Phillips has operated POV (for point of view) cameras that allow for various perspectives to be edited into every episode. He manages to do this work in addition to his Fresno State studies, which includes participation in the academically demanding Smittcamp Family Honors College at Fresno State.

“My job is to achieve great action shots from unique angles that the regular cameras on the sidelines can’t capture,” said Phillips. “Depending on the challenge, I will place between two and 10 cameras.

“Then, at tribal council, I operate three POV cameras in the voting hut,” he explains. “When someone goes to vote and you see the over-the-shoulder shot of the parchment, that is my shot.”

Phillips got interested in photography as a child growing up in Sanger. “I was always fascinated by the idea of capturing moments in time and explored this using my parents’ cameras, but mainly just as a hobby,” he said.

When he was 15, he was a contestant on the kids reality show “Endurance,” which aired on cable’s Discovery Kids and NBC. “It was a truly unique and life-changing experience,” Phillips said, exposing him to TV production and igniting a passion for videography and cinematography.

At Sanger High School, he said, “I started shooting no-budget videos and short films with my buddies, and shortly thereafter I knew that I wanted to pursue camera work as a career.”

In 2006, after graduating from high school, Phillips wrangled a job as a production assistant when “Endurance” filmed its fifth season at Shaver Lake. Three summers later, after his sophomore year at Fresno State, he says, “I discovered this job called the ‘Dream Team,’ which is essentially a production assistant for the challenge and art departments on ‘Survivor.’”

Team members also test all of the show’s challenges and shadow other departments in which they’re interested, leading to an offer to be a POV camera operator during the show’s season in Samoa, working for SEG (Survivor Entertainment Group), part of Mark Burnett Productions.

Phillips said it takes about 250 crew members to produce each series, not including local people who work at various tasks while the crew is on location.
