New biological control
proves effective against tadpole shrimp
n Central California rice fields, the tadpole
shrimp, Triops longicaudatus, is an invasive pest that can have
devastating effects on rice yields. Copper sulfate, a Class I
Hazardous Material, is the standard means of tadpole shrimp control,
but it is becoming more expensive, and for organic farmers, has been
restricted by the USDA.

Fresno State student Jeffrey Phillips captured
1st place and Viewer's Choice Award in the 2008 "I am Fresno State!"
student video competition. Videos of winning entries are available
for viewing on the free, online video sharing platform YouTube. The
second annual video contest is a component of the Website,

Fresno State senior heads to NASA
California State University,
Fresno senior Lauren McQuone has always set her sights high. The
Smittcamp Family Honors College meteorology major is stretching even
earthly bounds in her latest pursuit. This summer, she will travel
to the Johnson Space Center in Houston to serve a paid internship
with NASA’s Undergraduate Student Research Program.

The

will confer an honorary doctoral degree - the CSU's highest
commendation - on Fresno businessman and philanthropist Pete P.
Peters at Fresno State's Commencement on May 17. For his unwavering

Fresno are taking Fresno County’s challenge to ride bicycles to work
on Thursday, May 15. That morning, President John D. Welty also will
be biking to the university. “Bike to Work Day” is a corporate
challenge issued by the Fresno County Bicycle Coalition to encourage

world’s largest milk carton

marketing students in the Sid Craig School of Business at California
State University, Fresno State hope to set a Guinness World Record
for the world’s largest milk carton. An official “unveiling” of the
15-foot, 7-inch milk carton will take place next to the Shehadey
Tower at the southeast corner of the Save Mart Center at noon on
Thursday, May 15.

Walheim speaks at Fresno State’s NASA workshop
Atlantis
shuttle astronaut Rex Walheim visited California State University,
Fresno’s NASA Educator Resource Center May 10. Col. Walheim shared his
experiences as an astronaut, including "walking" in space during a workshop for middle and high school science and
mathematics teachers. Walheim, an Air Force colonel, has participated in
five spacewalks during 12 years as an astronaut, most recently during
the STS-122 mission earlier this year.

for the third summer celebration presented by the University
Agricultural Laboratory (popularly known as the University Farm) on
June 21 at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market. Also new this year

receiving master’s degrees at Commencement this year have been named
Deans’ Graduate Medalists for the Class of 2008 at California State
University, Fresno.The medalists are chosen as the outstanding

colleges of academic discipline and the Division of Student Affairs,
based on academic excellence, community involvement and other
achievements.
