Music in October
Lumen Valo, a Finnish vocal ensemble, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Concert Hall of the Music Building. Admission is free. Lumen Valo is an internationally known a cappella group from Helsinki whose members perform music from a broad range of genres and time periods. Also on the Department of Music’s performance calendar in October are the music faculty concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8; the Jazz Composers Orchestra, Oct. 9; the Wind Ensemble, Oct. 19; Wind Ensemble II, Oct. 24; BUG (a modern jazz group) with James Miley, piano, Oct. 27; and Jazz Bands Halloween Concert, Oct. 29. ‘Some Americans Abroad’ at University Theatre
The 2006-07 season of the University Theatre begins at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, with “Some Americans Abroad,” written by Richard Nelson and directed by Fresno State professor Terry Miller. The comedy is about a group of Americans on a theater tour in London. Performances also are scheduled at 8 p.m. Oct. 7 and 10-14, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct 8. Faculty kick off poetry series
Fresno
State creative writing faculty members will join at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, for the beginning of this season’s Fresno Poets Association series at the Fresno Art Museum. Steven Church, new to the faculty, Corrine Haines, John Hales, Tim Skeen and Steve Yarbrough are scheduled to participate in the series debut. Church will sign his memoir, “The Guinness Book of Me,” at a reception following the reading. For more information, call 278.1528.

 

Tribute to James Winter on Oct. 8
Professor emeritus of music James Winter, who died in June, will be memorialized Sunday, Oct. 8, at the annual Music Faculty in Concert at the Concert Hall in the Music Building. Among the performers will be Helene Joseph-Weil, Jose Diaz, Thomas Hiebert, Natasha Kislenko and Teresa Beaman. Details and reservations, call 278.5829.

 

Yang will perform in Keyboard Concerts series
Joyce Yang, the 20-year-old silver medalist at last year’s Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Concert Hall at Fresno State as part of the Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts series. Yang will play works by J.S. Bach, Vine, Medtner, Chopin and Brahms. Click here for details.
