Entrepreneurship course grants deadline Oct. 2
Today, Oct. 2, is the deadline for faculty to apply for Coleman Foundation fellowships through Fresno State’s Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for this academic year. The fellowship program offers a two-semester stipend to support curriculum development involving entrepreneurship into an existing course or creating a new course. Stop the Hate Week activities
A candlelight vigil is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. today, Oct. 2, in the Peace Garden as part of the week’s Stop the Hate, Stop the Violence, Build a Culture of Peace observance. The week’s other activities will include panel presentations on religion and peace, immigration, violence against women, reduction of prejudice, war and peacemaking.

Roman British invasion topic of archeology lecture
The Roman invasion of northern Britain will be the topic at today’s (Oct. 2) free archeology lecture.  Dr. James Russell, professor emeritus of classical, Near Eastern and religious Studies at the
University of British Columbia, will speak at 7 p.m. in the Alice Peters Auditorium of the University Business Center. The lecture is sponsored by the Fresno County Archaeological Society, San Joaquin Valley Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America and Fresno State’s departments of geography and social sciences. Fire-extinguisher training
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management will offer fire-extinguisher training sessions at 9 a.m. Tuesday and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 and 4, at the northeast corner of the Animal Science Pavilion parking lot (Lot Y). Anti-Semitism panel discussion
The Fresno State National Coalition Building Institute offers a panel discussion about anti-Semitism at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the University Student Union, Rooms 312-314. There is no admission charge to the event, which is open to all staff and faculty members, students and the general public.

International Coffee Hour
October’s International Coffee Hour series will “visit” Europe and Asia in five programs, each from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays in University Student Union Rooms 312-314. Dr. Barlow Der Mugrdechian (Armenian Studies, pictured at right) begins this month’s presentations with a look at “Armenia: Land of the Ancient and the Modern” on Tuesday, Oct. 3.  Visiting scholar Dr. Britt-Inger Marklund talks about Sweden Oct. 10; student Puri Weltmer about the London Semester study program on Oct. 17; student Conrad Braganza about Dubai  on Oct. 24; and Dr. Charles Arokiasamy (chair, Counseling Special Education) about

Horticulture Club plant sale Oct. 6
Houseplants, succulents and decorative pots will be available for sale by the Horticulture Club from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6. The sale will be on the plaza near the Memorial Fountain.

Arne Nixon Center October gatherings
Children’s book authors will make presentations at two October events of the Arne Nixon Center Advocates. The first is the group’s annual meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, where writing partners Alma Flor Ada and F. Isabel Campoy will appear at the Peters Educational Center Auditorium in the new
Student Recreation Center. Clovis children’s book author Margarita Engle, will present a program at 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at Arte Américas in downtown Fresno. The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature is part of the Henry Madden Library. Click here for details on both events.

Homecoming decorating contest
The Staff Assembly is urging participation in the annual We’ve Got That Bulldog Spirit Homecoming office decorating contest. Judging will begin Monday, Oct. 9, for this year’s contest celebrating Homecoming, which is the weekend of Oct. 13-15. University Lecture Series program Oct. 24
Singer, songwriter Peter Yarrow, one-third of the popular folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, will be joined by his daughter, Bethany Yarrow, for a University Lecture Series presentation at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Satellite Student Union. The Yarrows’ topic is “Father and Daughter and Beyond: A Legacy of Commitment and Activism.” Click here for details.

Barrel tasting scheduled Oct. 27
The ninth annual Fresno-Madera Alumni and Friends Wine Tasting Social is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Fresno State Winery, sponsored by the
College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and the Ag One Foundation. Included will be barrel tastings of 2005 Duarte Vineyards Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Click here for details.

Prejudice reduction is workshop aim
Registrations are being accepted for a day-long “Welcoming Diversity: A Prejudice Reduction Workshop” beginning at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 4 in the University Student Union, Rooms 312-314. The workshop builds skills by helping participants learn how to be open to and accepting of cultures different from their own. For information/registration, call 278.6946.
