Reception for entrepreneur in residence
A social reception for Yrma Rico, the retired TV executive whose career began in Fresno, will be begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Weber BMW, 7171 N. Palm Ave., Fresno. The University Police Department will host Red Friday on Nov. 3 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The event is in the University Student Union Pavilion.

CSU schedules justice workshop
California State University’s role in preparing students for occupations in criminal justice will be explored during a half-day forum beginning at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3 at California State University, Los Angeles. Fresno State faculty and students will participate. Experts in such fields as forensics, judicial service, homeland security and law enforcement will be joined by CSU officials in discussion of the role universities can play in the various fields embraced by criminal justice studies. Conference proposal deadline near
The deadline is Monday, Nov. 6, to submit paper abstracts and proposals for complete panels, workshops and roundtables to be part of the Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the U.S. conference in Fresno from March 22 to 25. The conference provides an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to make presentations at a national conference, whose theme is "Work, Migration, and Globalization: Contested Journeys in U.S. Ethnic Literature.” The conference is hosted by the College or Arts and Humanities. Greece, Sri Lanka, Iran on Coffee Hour schedule
November’s three International Coffee Hour programs will feature presentations on Greece, Sri Lanka and Iran. Each presentation begins at 2 p.m. in the University Student Union, Rooms 312-314. On Tuesday, Nov. 7, Dr. George S. Vozikis (Management) will talk about Athens and the Olympics. International students Anthony T. Samarasekera and Dulshan M. Kumara will discuss geography, culture and economy of their native Sri Lanka on Nov. 14 and Dr. Reza Motameni (Marketing) will give a historical perspective on Iran on Nov. 28.

Kevin Starr will speak on campus
Historian Kevin Starr, the California librarian emeritus, will speak at 6 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Peters Education Center of the Student Recreation Center. The Central Valley Institute for Regional and Historical Studies is co-sponsoring the presentation with the
Fresno City and County Historical Society.  Starr, who teaches at the University of Southern California, researches and has published books and articles on California history and American cultural and urban history.

Abosch discusses political theory and law
Dr. Yishaiya Abosch, an assistant professor of political science, will explore connections between political theory and law in American history during the next History Project 2006-07 Scholar Series at 4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Smittcamp Alumni House. Abosch will discuss how political theorists Locke, Harrington and Montesquieu influenced the Founding Fathers and their relevance through American history to the 21st century. Faculty urged to promote student grants
Twenty grants of up to $500 are available through the Educational Research and Project Grant Program to help undergraduate and graduate students conduct research under faculty supervision. $avings for using your own cup
To encourage preservation of natural resources, University Food Services offers faculty and staff a deal on brewed coffee and fountain soft drinks purchased at the Food Court and Union Snack Bar at the Pit and at Round Table Pizza and the Bucket. Refills cost $1 if you supply your own cup from home or one purchased at the Kennel Bookstore. Reusing your cup also cuts the amount of trash on campus.

Project manager Ray Rahn dies
Ray Rahn, who retired in July after working more than seven years as a project manager in the Department of Facilities Planning, passed away Oct. 2. Mr. Rahn was a contractor with the university before taking the job at Fresno State.
