Violence Prevention Project recognizes volunteers
Violence Prevention Project volunteersThe Women’s Resource Center’s Violence Prevention Project held its first appreciation ceremony for volunteers, who worked last fall as office assistants, peer counselors and peer educators, all under the center’s director, Francine Oputa. A key element was peer educator-conducted presentations to about 400 students on domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Situations were dramatized as part of SPEAK (Students Providing Empowerment, Advocacy and Knowledge). The project team included volunteers Antoinette Aguilar, Lia Chacon, Lacey Cole, Hannah Day, Diego De La Puente, Ihuoma Ezbuziem, Alex Gonzalez, Witney Grandi, Heather Gregory, Staci Hardig, Kaley Henry, Hector Hernandez, Luis Hernandez, Brittania Leon, Sarait Martinez, Margie Nance, Audra Scott, Randy Syouthoum, Erica Tovar, Jessica Trevino and Melissa Watkins; co-director Dr. Bernadette Muscat; project coordinator Mica Vargas; graduate student assistant/volunteer coordinator Matilde Gonzalez; interns Nohemi Acuna, Erika Mendoza and Regina Reyes; administrative assistant Sue Rudd; and student assistant Amy Wilson. Wang Award faculty nominations due
Nominations for the prestigious Wang Family Excellence Award for faculty members are due Friday, Jan. 12. The award provides $20,000 to each of four faculty selected from the 23-campus California State University system. Faculty are recognized for “extraordinary commitment and dedication,” “exemplary contributions and achievements in their academic disciplines” and for “having a discernable effect on students.” Edward EmmanuEl, a Fresno State theatre arts professor, was an awardee in 2000-2001. Services to Community Expo on Jan. 31
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in the fourth annual Services to the Community Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Satellite Student Union, sponsored by the office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning. The event is an opportunity to learn about dozens of nonprofit organizations that can use the campus community’s volunteer time. For students, it’s also a place to get information about service-learning experience and career opportunities. Faculty members can learn about community issues, how they’re being addressed and how students can participate. Faculty will receive information to share with students. Pearson Teacher Fellows sought
Faculty and staff are asked to encourage Fresno State graduating seniors to apply to become one of 34 Pearson Teacher Fellows across the United States. The fellowship was created through a partnership between Jumpstart and Pearson, a media corporation, to help achieve Jumpstart's mission of getting every child ready to succeed in school. Each fellowship offers a $12,500 stipend over two years, plus a teaching salary and specialized training for the program and in early career development. Jumpstart trains and supports 75 Fresno State students and 30 Fresno City College students, who help over 340 at-risk preschool children in 17 preschool classrooms improve their literacy, language and social skills. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1.
