A daylong Introduction to GIS workshop for fulltime faculty begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the Interdisciplinary Spatial Information Systems Center (IT104). GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems, which are computer-based data gathering and analyzing programs that can focus on specific areas. Life Work Links plans a presentation on “Avoiding Burnout” at noon Wednesday, Jan. 10, in the Smittcamp Alumni House Boardroom. Fresno Bee’s top editor will speak on campus
Betsy Lumbye, senior vice president and executive editor of The Fresno Bee, will discuss “Newspapers in the Internet Age” during the next meeting of the Friends of the Madden Library at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at the Alice Peters Auditorium in the University Business Center. Lumbye, worked at newspapers in Colorado, South Carolina, Tennessee and Stockton before joining The Bee in 1997. Her appearance is part of a year-long series of conversations with Fresno Bee staffers about various aspects of newspaper journalism in the central San Joaquin Valley. Chican@ Youth Conference on Jan. 13
The 34th annual Chican@ Youth Conference is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 13, welcoming middle and high school students and, for the first time, Fresno State students with a theme of "Act Locally, Think Globally." Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlán (MEChA) and the University Outreach Services Office of Fresno State are conference sponsors. Meeting Maker purge set Jan. 13-14
A purge of old Meeting Maker information is planned Jan. 13-14 to help make the calendaring system more responsive. All meeting events calendared before July 1, 2006, will be deleted. Individuals who need to retain information from before that date can use the Meeting Maker’s Export as Text feature. African American student conference Feb. 2 and 23
The 25th annual African American Student Recruitment Conference will be held in February at Fresno State to acquaint middle and high school students with the university’s attractions. Ethicist Randy Cohen speaks Jan. 30
Randy Cohen, who writes a nationally syndicated newspaper column on ethics and regularly contributes to National Public Radio newscasts, speaks about ethical issues facing students during his University Lecture Series presentation Jan. 30. Nominations sought for Richter Awards
Nominations for the Jan and Bud Richter Awards of Excellence in Education will be accepted through Feb. 23. The Richters, longtime benefactors of Fresno State, set up the annual awards to honor a professor and staff member in the Kremen School of Education and Human Development and one professor in liberal studies outside Kremen.
